The Caspian Scientific Research Institute of Fisheries (CaspNIRKh) was founded in 1897 with the aim of studying the state of aquatic biological resources and the ecosystem of the Southern Fishery Area of the Volga-Caspian Fisheries Basin (zone of responsibility)
Currently, research is carried out in three main areas:
- Monitoring of the state of stocks and reproduction of aquatic biological resources of the Volga-Caspian basin.
Objective: to develop and justify programs and recommendations aimed at preserving, increasing and rationally using the reserves of aquatic biological resources, improving the regime of fishing.
- Ecology of fishery reservoirs in the area of responsibility.
Objective: To study the influence of environmental factors of the environment on the formation of reserves of aquatic biological resources and qualitative state.
- Aquaculture - the development of artificial reproduction of aquatic biological resources.
Purpose: development of a set of measures and recommendations for the development of aquaculture in the Volga-Caspian fisheries basin; creation and introduction of intensive technologies and methods of breeding juveniles and growing commercial fish.
The main goal of the CaspNIRKh research is a comprehensive solution of the problems of studying, developing and efficiently using the aquatic bioresources of the Caspian basin in the interests of Russia's economic development.
The Institute has 10 scientific research laboratories and 8 departments, a fishing gear workshop, a specialized research fleet, the Scientific-Experimental Base of the CaspNIRKh - the "BIOS" Center and a research and experimental complex for molecular genetic research in Astrakhan region (Ikryanoe village), as well as the laboratory of commercial ichthyology in Elista (Republic of Kalmykia) and Dagestan branch.
CaspNIRKh develops marine research in the Caspian, expanding the bank of unique biological and environmental materials, and presents scientifically grounded forecasts of changes in the state of bioresources and the ecosystem of the sea as a whole. The Institute has a very rich database of data collected over many decades and conducts research throughout the Caspian Sea, being, in fact, an international scientific center in the Caspian. Despite the political disunity of the Caspian states, their scientific fishery centers continue close and fruitful cooperation with CaspNIRKh. An important task of cooperation is coordinating the implementation of the decisions of the Commission on Aquatic Bioresources of the Caspian Sea, of which Russia, Iran, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan are members, as well as the Russian-Iranian Commission for Fisheries. Much attention is paid to cooperation with CITES, FAO, IFREMER and other foreign government and non-governmental organizations.
CaspNIRKh provides methodological assistance to specialists of the Caspian scientific research institutes and centers; The Institute maintains contacts with scientific institutions of foreign countries - Poland, Hungary, Norway, France, the USA and other countries, is a regular organizer and participant of international scientific conferences and meetings, exhibitions and symposia, an information center for obtaining reliable information on the problems of the fisheries of the Volga-Caspian region. This generally contributes to the increase of scientific prestige and the deserved international authority of the institute and the fishing industry of Russia as a whole.
Particularly noteworthy is the high level of CaspNIRKh research, the ecosystem approach to studying the biological resources of the reservoir, and the scientific potential.
